TIPS FROM YOUR LOCAL TAMPA ARBORIST

December 3, 2018

With summer rains coming down on the regular, you might be noticing some overgrowth in and around your yard in Tampa. While some homeowners are quick to wield their pruning shears, be mindful of what you do with them. A seemingly simple snip or improperly applied fertilizer can compromise the health and livelihood of an entire tree. Whether you have a small lemon grove or a poolside palm garden, our professional arborist has some input to guide your landscaping choices.

 THE VALUE OF MULCH

Mulch is crucial for the success of your plants, especially bushes and trees. Some individuals mistake it for a cosmetic covering, but it has plenty of functional purposes too. Ultimately, mulch creates a barrier against high temperatures. The Florida sun beats down, and it isn’t healthy for certain flora to endure the intense heat. In tandem, the mulch also keeps the roots wet by retaining moisture. There is plenty of rain in central Florida, but the sun’s rays can make the rainwater evaporate before it can nourish your plants. Beyond protection and water retention, mulch also prevents soil compaction, lawn mower damage, and root competition from weeds.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR PESTS AND DISEASE

Bugs and pests are as common as thunderstorms in Tampa Bay, so it’s important to keep them out of your gardens and laurel oaks. Remove wasp nests the moment construction is underway, and don’t let nests remain in branches. If the oaks or palms on your property are looking a little peaky, be wary of possible disease. To confirm a diagnosis, a certified arborist will have to conduct a formal inspection.

REMOVE DEAD BRANCHES AND STUMPS

At the first sign of dead branches, take them down. Not only are they a safety hazard to you, but they can also affect future growth. If the dead limbs are out of reach, contact professional tree trimmers for assistance. As for stumps, you should probably defer to arborists as well. Many property owners leave them behind after the trunk has been cut down, but as they rot, they become attractive to nesting insects.

KNOW WHEN TO PRUNE

Pruning protocol changes with the season and varies from plant to plant in Tampa. Without the proper information, you could do more harm than you intended. Flowering trees, in particular, need to be pruned properly, and an arborist can help enhance the colorful blossoms.
